My Background

Associate Marriage and Family therapist Hedda Carney facing forward and smiling warmly

I received my MA in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Expressive Arts Therapy from California Institute of Integral Studies. I believe that we are all creative beings at heart, and in my own life I have seen the transformational power of creativity towards wholeness and growth.

I am a trauma-informed therapist and I value the inner wisdom of my clients to direct their own journey towards self discovery and healing. I feel honored to support my clients and witness them as they discover parts of themselves that have been buried by difficult life experiences. I welcome people from all backgrounds and life experiences, and I recognize how individual suffering is often tied to larger systemic issues such as racism, classism, sexism, genderism, ageism, sizeism, and ableism.

My Approach

Do you ever feel lost, overwhelmed by your emotions, or simply unsure of what steps to take next? Often, external or internal messages can make us feel as though we are not enough or that there is something wrong with us for having these feelings. I believe that compassionately exploring these parts of ourselves help us to honor our unique needs and desires, which is integral to living an authentic and fulfilled life.

Therapy can help you understand and voice your emotions, and get in touch with how they are connected to your physical body and mind. In session we will explore your present feelings, thoughts, and beliefs, as well as looking back to your history to find connections between your past and present realities. I will ask questions about sensations you might be having in your body throughout the session, because I believe the body carries deep wisdom about our past and current experiences.

As a therapist, my top priority is making sure you feel safe and deeply heard. I will follow your needs and work collaboratively with you to make sure you are getting what you desire from therapy. I also enjoy bringing in humor and levity to my work with clients as we work towards building a strong and secure therapeutic relationship.
